A Poem About My First Video Game

Nostalgic Arcade Control Panel

Daily writing prompt: What was your first ever video game?

I remember the arcade in town. My sister and I would head out with a pocket full of quarters. When they were gone, it was time to go home. We’d meet friends there and generally had a blast.

There were a select few games that we liked to play, one in particular. On vacation that summer the hotel we were staying at just happened to have the arcade machine for this game in their common area. We played it daily. I was pretty good at it. My sister was far better. She could roll the game through the final screen and start over. Her name was up on the high score list the entire time we were there.

The prompt this morning reminded me of it and made me smile. This short little verse came to mind immediately. I was going to write a full poem about it, but then I thought this stands on its own:

Hop, hop,
Squash.
Game over.
