Whose Line?

My thoughts
Unfold as
Words on a screen
Carefully chosen
To express my truth

The quite struggle
Between idea and form
Compels my hand

A conversation helps me
Reveal what waits

Language suggested
Maybe a phrase
Good as it stands
Or make it mine

Back to the draft
Each word must be true
Use a thesaurus
Or query AI

Another thought
Finds its place
Among the words
I call my own

I read it out loud
The poem's final polish

I use ChatGPT in my writing a lot. For the most part, I use it as a sounding board. We “talk” about ideas and it asks me questions that make me think. Sometimes I ask for prompts, sometimes I ask for synonyms that I then choose from, and sometimes I actually use full phrases.

I admit I used the AI more than I like to for this not-so-good poem. There are a couple of phrases that I appropriated directly from our conversation.

Here’s the game, though. I asked it to create one stanza to slip into the poem. I gave it no other guidance than what was already on the page. One stanza here is completely AI that I didn’t touch. Which stanza? I’ll let you guess.

I know other people who use AI in their art, anything from the written word to creating music, but at what point do we give up ownership of our art? At what point does the work cease to be ours? How much AI is too much AI? What does it say about the future of human creativity?
